ITALIAN BREAKFAST IN FLORENCE
I’ve already described where to grab some tasty pizza here and where to find the most delicious ice-creams here. From the beginning I’ve known that next to the two very important articles, I will need to create third one dedicated to… Italian breakfast!
Everyone who has been at least once in Italy knows, that there is nothing better in the morning than… to find the nearest café and experience Italian “colazione”, which consists of coffee and cornetto.
What doeas cornetto mean? It’s like French crossaint and can be vuoto (empty, without filling) or filled with an amazing cream – pistachio, nutella, white chocolate or something different delicious.
ITALIAN TRADITION
Italians usually drink cappuccino in the morning, during the day they grab espresso in the rush. I am not a big fan of espresso, yet I like strong coffee – the perfect balance for me is macchiato – espresso with a little amount of milk.
How much does Italian breakfast cost? Even in the center of Florence, which is known as one of the most expensive cities in Italy (100% of truth), this set (cornetto + coffee) costs maximally 2.60 euro. I think that for Italians coffee is something holy, strictly connected to the culture, so they think there can’t be the situation when someone couldn’t afford it!
Nevertheless be careful, because it’s not always a rule in the center. Usually you pay 1-2 euro more when you decide to sit down at the table or outside, but it depends on the café.
Below you will find the list of my favoutite cafés and places, where you can eat something sweet, divided to categories. If you had been somewhere from the list, let me know in comments!
WITH A VIEW OF DUOMO
CAFFETTERIA DELLE OBLATE
Caffeteria Delle Oblate is an extremely lovely place in the center, situated 3 minutes from Duomo, in a monumental, artistic pile. It is also a library, where students come to study. On Thursday’s evening there is usually organized aperitivo for Erasmus students. From the café and its terrace stretches one of the most beautiful views of Duomo.
LA TERRAZZA DELLA RINASCENTE
In the corner of Piazza della Republicca, on the last floor of the building Rinascente there is Caffé La Terrazza, where is an amazing view of Duomo. The price for coffee is also “amazing” – more than 4 euro. Nevertheless I think, that for this view and moment it’s worth to overpay.
FOR ITALIAN BREAKFAST + BAKERIES
FRATELLI CUORE
I’ve underlined before, that food on the railway station I don’t associate with anything great or in a reasonable price. However, in Santa Maria Novella there is a cool place – Fratelli Cuore, where not only you can eat a delicious pizza (here I was writing about it), but also yummy cornetto. It’s a perfect place for Italian breakfast!
I’ve been looking for the best cornetto for a long time. I’ve visited many beautiful, original, interesting places and I didn’t want to admit this but finally I’ve eaten the best one.. on railway station! Cornetto with pistachio cream – mmm I recommend (1.30 euro)!!! (thank you Jack for recommending me this place and making conscious, that in Santa Maria Novella these goodies are)
I DOLCI DI PATRIZIO COSI
Between Duomo and Santa Croce there is a bakery/cafe. If you are a gourmand, go there!
VECCHIO FORNO
Another bakery, many tasty bakings.
Address: Via Guelfa, 32, Firenze
CHIAROSCURO
It is situated 2 minutes from Piazza della Reppublica. I’ve drank a delicious coffee there and I’ve eaten a very popular in Florence budino di riso – yummy! Try it!
IN URBAN STYLE
Places in a Starbucks way, which is rather unpopular among Italian cafés, but it’s nice to go there (coffee a bit more expensive than in typical Italian bars).
DITTA ARTIGIANALE
LA COCOTTE FIRENZE
ALTERNATIVE
VOLUME
In piazza Santo Spirito you can find a cafe Volume, which decoration is a bit different – more alternative than in other Italian places. There is nice music, you can sit down inside or outside, just on piazza Santo Spirito.
IL VINILE
The leading motive are vinyls – it’s something for rock and good music lovers.
WITH A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN
GELATERIA LEONARDO
If you like to spend time drinking coffee or wine and beautiful setting is important to you – go there necessarily.
SIT’N’BREAKFAST
SIT’N’BREAKFAST is definitely one of my favourite places in Florence. Beautiful garden, low prices, chilling climate. If you are an Erasmus – it’s a perfect place to study. Many students come with their laptops and work on projects. Intellectual atmosphere floats around.
LIBRI LIBERI
I would say exactly everything the same about Libri Liberi as above – these places are even side by side.
